That explains why resorts on the Greek island of Santorini have captured the imagination of travelers everywhere — including the respondents to Travel + Leisure’s 2019 World’s Best Awards survey, who selected Santorini properties for each of the top spots in our Top 5 Greece Resort Hotels category. Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities. Related: The World's Best Awards 2019 Despite the ongoing economic crisis, tourism is booming in Greece, with visitor numbers reaching a record high in the summer of 2018. Nowhere is this trend more evident than Santorini, where there are now more than 300 hotels on a 30-square-mile island. Among them are some of the finest properties in Greece — many with grandstand views of the iconic caldera. One property readers called out for that reason: Grace Hotel Santorini, Auberge Resorts Collection (No. 2). “The rooms are modern and luxurious, but still have a traditional caldera influence,” wrote one fan, who also raved about the hotel’s food. “The hotel breakfast is the best I've ever had. Everyday they have a new menu, and the staff is more than happy to make custom dishes.” And while there are many legendary hotels on the island, it may surprise some readers to learn that this year’s winning property is, in fact, brand-new. Part of the well-established Canaves group of hotels, which have been winning awards on Santorini for years, Canaves Oia Epitome — which opened for business in the summer of 2018 — managed to wow guests from the get-go. As one respondent put it, “Maybe one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had in my life. The food and drinks were amazing, and you simply could not beat the view. Staff was incredibly friendly, and the room was super spacious, clean, and beautiful.” 5. Canaves Oia Epitome Christos Drazos/Courtesy of Canaves Oia Epitome Score: 97.58 More information: canaves.com On an island as popular (and as small) as Santorini, two qualities are most highly prized in a hotel room: space, and privacy. The property readers selected as this year’s No. 1 Greek Resort Hotel, Canaves Oia Epitome, delivers on both fronts. As one respondent put it, “This brand-new hotel has huge villas with very large outdoor areas and large private pools. It’s one of the few hotels on the island with such so much space. The location of the hotel also provides maximum privacy. It’s close to the hustle and bustle of Oia village, but you avoid all the crowds.” Canaves Oia Epitome is the latest addition to a collection of Santorini hotels that includes the award-winning Canaves Oia Hotel, Canaves Oia Suites, and Canaves Oia Sunday Suites. The new property, Epitome, is the first Canaves hotel to be located on the northwestern coast of the island and, therefore, has a more peaceful, secluded atmosphere than many of the hotels in the busy main town.
