Páros, in the Cyclades, took No. 1, with five other Greek spots, including the Aegean paradise of Mykonos and the Ionian island of Corfu, further dominating the field. Can you blame our readers for being so infatuated? These destinations boast some of the most recognizable landscapes and villages in the world. And the country’s best resort hotels are those that bring the Greek island fantasy — whitewashed walls, climbing flowers, unspoiled views of the sea — to life. Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities. Near the town of Elounda, Blue Palace, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, has been welcoming guests to its airy, clean-lined rooms and suites for decades. Travelers can sunbathe by the exclusive pebbled beach and take day trips to explore Minoan ruins or the Venetian fortress of Spinalonga. Santorini, the No. 4 island in Europe, is home to our top two resort hotels in Greece this year. Coming in second is Canaves Oia, a 33-year-old boutique property on the grounds of a 17th-century wine-cellar cave complex. With its en suite plunge pools and private alfresco dining options, many of our readers noted that it’s ideal for honeymoons. The No. 1 property this year is equally romantic, a repeat winner that continues to draw couples thanks to its tranquil atmosphere. The enviable location in the picturesque town of Oia stood out for readers, as did the all-white rooms and their traditional Cycladic architecture. One respondent remembers, “I have never seen sunsets like the ones I experienced from the infinity pool, with a view overlooking the stunning caldera.” Many readers also felt that our survey’s highest rating of “Excellent” didn’t do Katikies justice. One responded, “if I could rate this hotel over and beyond ‘Excellent,’ I most certainly would.” As if you needed any more reason to visit Greece, as of this June Katikies has a stunning sister hotel on Mykonos.
