If you’re looking for Mexico’s best urban accommodations, the capital is the place to be. Mexico City has changed dramatically over the past decade. New high-profile restaurants, major museum projects, and trendy shops have added to the city’s longstanding attractions — which include top-notch street food, leafy neighborhoods perfect for strolling, and some incredible hotels. Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe—to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise lines, spas, airlines, and more. In the hotels category, readers rated properties on their rooms and facilities, location, service, food and drink, and overall value. Hotels were categorized as city or resort properties based on their locations. The three Mexico City hotels that most charmed T+L readers this year are all in spitting distance of Chapultepec Park in Polanco, one of the finest neighborhoods in the city. Las Alcobas, second on the list, offers easy access to shopping and trendy restaurants. The property has an intimate boutique vibe, with just 35 rooms, whose decor is inspired by Aztec and Mayan cultures. “You will feel pampered and at home at this pretty, well-managed, elegant hotel,” one raved. The Four Seasons, No. 3, and our winner, the St. Regis, also earn top marks for location. They’re both on the Paseo de la Reforma, within walking distance of some of the city’s top art galleries and boutiques, but their architectural styles are very different — the Four Seasons is in a historic hacienda-style building set around a courtyard, while the St. Regis occupies a sleek high-rise. “Perfect in every way,” is how one T+L voter described the 189-room St. Regis Mexico City, which occupies the first 15 floors of a Cesar Pelli–designed high rise on Paseo de la Reforma. Yabu Pushelberg was responsible for the look of the spacious rooms, which provide panoramic views of the city. The St. Regis’s signature King Cole bar has an outdoor terrace overlooking Chapultepec Castle; several readers found that patio was an ideal spot for sipping a mezcal cocktail on warm evenings.
