Few people know travel quite like Padma Lakshmi, the entrepreneur, model, author, and Top Chef host. After all, she’s on the road several times a month.

That’s why it’s no surprise Lakshmi loves San Miguel de Allende, the vibrant Mexican town that was named the No. 1 city on the planet in this year’s World’s Best Awards.

With its thriving culinary scene, San Miguel was the perfect backdrop for the finale of Top Chef Season 12. One of the most acclaimed chefs in all of Mexico, Enrique Olvera, has opened his restaurant Moxi inside the award-winning Hotel Matilda.

But that's not the only culinary gem in San Miguel. Travelers can enjoy views of Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel from local chef Gonzalo Martinez’s standout restaurant, Quince, or sip tequila at the intimate, obsidian tile-covered Casa Dragones Tasting Room.

Of course, San Miguel offers travelers so much more than just inventive restaurants and smooth mescal. Discover how this quiet colonial town has been transformed into a global destination — and how it worked its magic on icons like Lakshmi.
