When in Rome, you are duty-bound to consume countless plates of pasta and bowls of gelato. And thanks to these stunning hotels, you can slip into your food coma in the greatest splendor. Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities. While the properties are ideally located near the boutiques on Via dei Condotti and iconic sights like the Trevi Fountain, the sweeping vistas from the higher-floored suites of either one make Rome’s bustle seem far removed. Of the venerated, 91-room Hassler, one reader writes, “Very lovely and with updated elegance!” Last year’s winner, Hotel de Russie, continues to receive ample praise for its 88 Art Deco–inspired rooms and the courtyard garden in which one may enjoy the finest of Italian dining at Le Jardin de Russie. For more distance from the excitement, consider the Rome Cavalieri, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, which is just over four miles from the city center (a complimentary shuttle whisks guests back and forth). Home to the city’s only Michelin three-starred restaurant, the sprawling, 345-room hotel sits on 15 acres of private park atop Monte Mario. Revel in the view from the Planetarium Suite’s private rooftop whirlpool, or join the other guests at one of the three outdoor swimming pools. The compound also has a 25,000-square-foot spa and two tennis courts, making it feel like a vacation retreat. But the No. 1 winner is back in the heart of the city, again just a stone’s throw from the Spanish Steps. Read on for the full list of our reader’s favorite properties.

Housed in a former school of architecture that’s been given a new life by interior-design wizard Michele Bönan, this chic boutique hotel combines contemporary furnishings with mid-century antiques for a thoroughly modern feel. The hotel is centrally located, close to the Spanish Steps and Via dei Condotti, and those who stay in one of its 28 rooms or two suites, which come with rosewood four-posters and two-tone marble bathrooms, find no fault. Wrote one fan: “This is my all time favorite hotel. The level of luxury is above all others.”
