It just seems to be one of those times when everything aligns and suddenly an already-beloved destination becomes more buzzed-about than ever. Our readers concur, as evidenced by their annual ranking of the World’s Best city hotels in Mexico, which saw CDMX edging out San Miguel de Allende for the majority of top spots. Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities. Related: The 2019 World's Best Awards Last year’s blue-ribbon winner — the colonial-inspired Rosewood San Miguel de Allende — took fifth this year, but still impresses with its enormous rooms and over-the-top service. One reader was also struck by the property’s grounds, describing them as “gorgeous and filled with beautiful sculpture and art.” No. 4 Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada, another San Miguel favorite, oozes old-fashioned, hacienda-style charm with its 18th-century buildings, which wrap around lushly planted inner courtyards. The next two spots on our list are veterans of our World’s Best Awards, and among Mexico City’s finest properties. In third place, Las Alcobas, in the Polanco district, has a contemporary look, with abundant wood and natural materials and a showpiece of a spiral staircase at the heart of the hotel. “It's super stylish,” said one reader. “You feel like you are in a private club tucked away in a posh part of the city.” The St. Regis (No. 2) couldn’t be more different: with sleek finishes, unobtrusive design, and enormous picture windows in every room, this property puts the city front and center. As for our winner? Well, that’s a familiar name to World’s Best veterans — but you’ll have to scroll down to find out. 5. Hotel Matilda, San Miguel de Allende Courtesy of Hotel Matilda Score: 97.54 More information: hotelmatilda.com San Miguel de Allende’s Hotel Matilda is a sultry, ultra-chic alternative to all the hacienda-style resorts in town. Rooms have four-poster beds, a moody, neutral palette with pops of color, and enormous soaking tubs, and in the central courtyard, an enormous Technicolor mural overlooks the swimming pool. The common spaces, too, are carefully considered: the lounges and spa feature bold, color-soaked designs that highlight the hotel’s collection of contemporary art. Don’t miss a visit to Moxi, the hotel’s restaurant, which has a to-die-for tasting menu that plays with Mexican staples and global influences.
