For years, Mexico’s beachy resort towns have eclipsed its cities in the eyes of international visitors — even Mexico City sees a mere fraction of the American arrivals of Cancún. But as the world has woken up to the innumerable treasures Mexico’s major metropolises have to offer, from the thriving arts scene of San Miguel de Allende to the rich food culture of Oaxaca, that’s finally changing. And lucky for us, there’s a wealth of fabulous places to stay in Mexico’s most exciting cities. Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Hotels were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities. Related: The 2018 World's Best Awards Three winners are in Mexico City — despite the destruction of last year’s earthquake, the capital remained a popular travel destination — while the remaining two are in San Miguel de Allende, which readers chose as the best city in the world for the second year in a row. W Mexico City (No. 5), Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City (No. 3), and St. Regis Mexico City (No. 2) are properties from well-established brands, proving that travelers are just as passionate as ever about hotels with an international reputation for luxury and top-notch service. Some readers gravitated toward the W’s youthful energy and colorful interiors, while others preferred the more subdued ambience of the Four Seasons, where the clean lines and muted tones of the guest rooms provide a relaxing respite from the fast-paced city outside. The St. Regis, with its 189 rooms and prime location on Paseo de la Reforma, the Champs-Elysées of Mexico City, continues to serve as a social hub for guests and locals. Last year, the property unveiled a stem-to-stern overhaul of its King Cole Bar and terrace, with a cutting-edge cocktail list from Ricardo Sandoval to round out the classic St. Regis offerings (never fear, Bloody Mary aficionados). A few hours northwest in San Miguel de Allende, the Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada also revealed a refresh to its 37 unique suites and a tequila hot spot, the Blue Bar. The hotel is also renowned for its Sazón cooking school, where guests are first led out on a market tour, then brought back to the hotel to prepare fresh salsas and salads. Read on for more on our winner — also in San Miguel de Allende — plus the full list of this year’s reader favorites.

Score: 95.36

The Rosewood San Miguel de Allende wows readers from the moment they walk in the door with its warm service, comfortable rooms with polished, colonial-inspired design, and too many how-did-they-think-of-that touches to count. Don’t miss a visit to the ultra-romantic Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar: its rooftop views are unbeatable at sunset, and as a hotel guest you’re given priority entry. The accommodations are expansive by any standard; rooms start at 570 square feet, and all include balconies and marble-clad bathrooms with soaking tubs. If it weren’t for the property’s ultra-convenient El Centro location, you might be tempted never to leave your room.
