Canada might be known for its incredible natural scenery — towering snowcapped peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, vast pine forests — but the country’s diverse, vibrant cities are just as worthy of your vacation plans. Luckily for travelers making the trip, plenty of world-class hotels await, from stately grandes dames and sleek high-rises to edgy boutique hotels.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities.

Toronto is arguably Canada’s best-known city, but the bustling metropolis only produced one honoree this year: the Ritz-Carlton, Toronto (No. 4), a swanky glass tower with a 450-piece Canadian art collection and standout views of the CN Tower.

By contrast, Vancouver took home the lion’s share this year, with five out of 10 of the winning properties located in the scenic West Coast city — including readers’ No. 2, the Loden Hotel, which climbed eight spots from last year’s list. While the eco-friendly hotel is renowned for its understated elegance, breathtaking views of the mountains and harbor, and buzzy French bistro, readers were most fond of the thoughtful and attentive service. “The front desk staff went above and beyond during our stay,” wrote one reader. “The manager even hand-delivered Band-Aids so we wouldn’t have to go out and buy them.”

Three Montreal hotels landed on this year’s list, including our winner. Readers loved the modern rooms and the rooftop terrace at Hôtel William Gray, which claimed the No. 7 spot, while Hôtel Nelligan’s old-world charm and cozy interiors earned it a nod at No. 10.

Queen Elizabeth II, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (who were married at the property), and Winston Churchill are among the distinguished guests to have stayed at this landmark in Montreal’s historic Golden Square Mile. Dating back to 1912, the interiors boast classic features like crystal chandeliers and marble fireplaces. But the elegant property manages to feel fresh and contemporary, thanks to the $200 million renovation the hotel underwent in 2012. “Incredible service and history,” wrote one reader. Guests also enjoyed the property’s special little touches, including afternoon tea and Dom Pérignon by the glass in the lobby’s champagne bar.
