Over the past year, Rio de Janeiro has been plagued with security concerns, but that didn’t stop readers from voting the Brazilian city into the No. 2 slot. “Rio is underrated because of the politics and crime,” wrote one. “The people themselves are warm, loving, and gentle. They love to share the beauty of their country. It’s one of my favorite places despite everything.” Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, continues to be a favorite for visitors, who cite the European atmosphere, vibrant nightlife, and superb food and wine scene. “Argentina’s economy goes up and down,” wrote one voter, “but the cultural highlights and great steak houses have endured.”
Readers continue to be beguiled by Antigua, an intimate city in central Guatemala with a wealth of handsome Spanish-colonial architecture. “All of the cobblestone streets are lined with colorful buildings, shops, museums, cathedrals, and ruins,” wrote one traveler. “If you’re a photographer or a history geek, this place is a must-see.”
