Breathtaking high-desert scenery.
One of the Southwest’s most stunning cities—with its surrounding iconic red rock buttes, mesas, and canyons—is also one of its most mystic. Energy vortices were discovered here in the 1980s, and ever since, the community has teemed with upscale but unpretentious New Agey spas, not to mention sophisticated galleries and bistros. But it’s really all about accessing the high-desert landscape, and you’ll find trailheads leading to hikes of varying difficulties around practically every corner.
Mii amo, A Destination Spa at Enchantment
The Mii Amo Spa offers spa "journeys" of three, four, and seven nights. The resort comprises 16 rose-colored, adobe casitas surrounded by twisting cottonwoods at the foot of the Boynton Canyon buttes. Upon arrival, guests meet with a spa representative to map out personalized programs, which may include organic facials, acupuncture sessions, or even watsu, a therapy combining massage, stretching, joint work, and Shiatsu. Additionally, classes on topics such as cooking, dance, vortex energy, and medicine plants are offered throughout the day, as well as spiritual therapies such as tarot card readings and reiki.
Enchantment Resort and Mii Amo Spa
This Southwest-style resort, made of low-slung adobe casitas in central Arizona’s Boynton Canyon, blends into the iconic red-rock cliffs of Sedona, a town known for its artsy, New Age vibe. Opened in 1987 and set on 70 acres, Enchantment’s 218 rooms and suites (fresh from a renovation in 2012) look out onto undulating canyon walls and green cottonwood trees, while neutral interiors are inspired by the surrounding terrain and are filled with accents that refer to local Native American culture (kiva fireplaces; area rugs inspired by traditional basket-weaving). Within Enchantment’s grounds, but separate from the main complex—also home to several pools, five tennis courts, pitch-and-putt golf, and hiking trails—is the transformative Mii Amo, a 24,000-square-foot destination spa with 16 casitas as well as a dedicated pool and regionally inspired restaurant. A three-, four-, or seven-day stay at Mii Amo—or a “Journey,” as it’s called—is priced on an all-inclusive basis (accommodation, spa treatments, and meals), while Enchantment guests can book treatments on an à la carte basis.
