The 9 Destinations We Were Obsessed With in 2016
It’s the stuff of romantic travel novels: the dramatic sea cliffs and pastel villas of Positano, Nerano, and Ravello on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, or Santorini, the romantic Greek island known for the whitewashed buildings and blue rooftops of Oia Town.
These were the places Travel + Leisure readers were obsessed with in 2016—the destinations you were most excited to see and to learn more about.
Take Charleston, South Carolina for example. After scoring the No. 1 spot on the 2016 World’s Best Cities list, this charming southern town was catapulted into the spotlight. The city even earned top honors for its hotels, including the award-winning Spectator (with hand-painted silk murals, butler service, and marble bathrooms).
And across the ocean, Portugal captivated even T+L editors. If you haven’t been to this petite European country, you should add it to your bucket list. Deemed the 2016 Destination of the Year, photogenic Portugal is easy to reach, and filled with rolling vineyards and ancient castles (including a medieval beauty in Óbidos that now doubles as hotel).
Other destinations we all fell in love with this year? Milan, which is still riding on the tailwinds of the 2015 World Expo, and Paris, which needs international love and support more than ever this year. And a ceaselessly exciting food scene has put Nashville back in the spotlight, which was also celebrated as the 2015 Reader’s Choice for Destination of the Year.
For Iceland and Machu Picchu, the attraction is timeless. We can’t imagine ever tiring of the the Land of Fire and Ice (its steaming geysers, impossibly blue glaciers, the Northern Lights flickering overhead) or the postcard-worthy views of the Lost City of the Incas.
