There is much more to Peru than Machu Picchu (although, we highly recommend making that a stop on your trip). The country's capital of Lima—which is located just over 300 miles west of the UNESCO site—is a mix of historic colonial landmarks and modern city scenes.

Given Lima's prime location on the country's Pacific coast, stunning vistas are a given. In between exploring the city's government-owned and maintained palaces and tracking the region's rich history of ancient civilizations, make sure to spend some time enjoying Lima's many beaches.
