We first wrote about EatWith—a website that connects locals with amateur and trained cooks for private, home-cooked meals—last year, when we identified “eating with a local” as one of the most important travel trends of 2014. While the company continues to champion its original vision, last month it launched a chef series in New York, inviting guests into the homes of professionals.

Sara Jenkins of Porchetta fame hosted the first meal in her Williamsburg apartment, and Einat Admony (Balaboosta, Bar Bolonat) is up on August 17. Twelve people will gather in her Fort Greene loft for a Yemenite brunch of pomegranate mimosas, hard-boiled eggs that have been soaked in tea, homemade pickles, malabi (a creamy, milk-based pudding), and more.

Later this summer, Israeli-born baker Uri Scheft—who makes everything from traditional rye to rugelach at Breads Bakery—will invite eight diners into his Chelsea apartment for a traditional Danish meal (a nod to his parents’ heritage).

According to Naama Shefi, EatWith’s Director of Communications, “We only invited chefs who are actually cook at home for their family and friends on a regular basis. Guests should expect a very personal experience that is very different from a traditional restaurant.”

EatWith plans to extend the program elsewhere this fall, starting with San Francisco and Barcelona.
