Where is the one place in the world that you most wanted to visit this year? Read about the destinations that T+L editors nominated.
For the past three years, the editors of Travel + Leisure have chosen a Destination of the Year based on the places we’ve visited and reported from while taking the pulse of where travelers are going now. In 2014, we selected Myanmar just as the country was beginning to open its doors to Westerners after long-awaited political change. Then in 2015, T+L named Cuba as the hottest new destination just before President Obama began restoring diplomatic relations with the Caribbean nation. Last year’s winner was Portugal, named for its exciting revitalization, record tourism growth, general affordability, and distinctive dynamism.
What destination will be the readers' choice for 2017? This year, the list of nominees includes perennial tourist favorites, such as Iceland, Sicily, and the Caribbean. Also on the list are a handful of American cites and a few states, some world capitals, and countries that are seeing a record number of visitors. Below, read about the 23 destinations that Travel + Leisure editors nominated.
