Yelp and GoFundMe Team Up to Give You a Better Way to Support Your Local Businesses (Video)

The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has taken a toll on many businesses out there — especially local restaurants.

While many places are switching to delivery or pick-up only, or just shutting their doors temporarily, it’s easy to assume that these businesses will struggle financially. To help these businesses, Yelp and GoFundMe have teamed up to allow restaurants and businesses to start fundraisers and users to leave donations directly on the Yelp website.

“Our data shows that U.S. consumer interest for restaurants has fallen 67% since March 10, and businesses like yoga studios and breweries have seen large decreases of 78% and 85%, respectively, due to social distancing measures,” said Chad Richard, SVP, Business and Corporate Development for Yelp, in a company statement.

This move will surely streamline the process of supporting your local restaurants and businesses, even if you can’t physically patron them. With so many GoFundMe requests going around on social media, this seems like an easier way of keeping track of and supporting the local businesses that you love.

According to Grubstreet, independent restaurant owners have been turning to GoFundMe in order to help them pay their rent or even support their workers who have had to be laid off due to city or state-wide quarantine orders. Placing a donation link on Yelp is a great way to get the word out that your business could use some support.

Any restaurant or business, namely restaurants, nightlife, beauty, and fitness businesses, can sync their GoFundMe campaigns with their Yelp pages. If a business has a fundraiser, a “Donate” link will automatically appear on their Yelp page starting Tuesday (in areas most affected by the virus) and over the next few days nationwide.

In addition to this new, streamlined service, the Yelp Foundation and GoFundMe have also “pledged to match up to $1 million in donations, with a $500 matching grant to eligible businesses that raise at least $500 on their GoFundMe,” according to the statement. Yelp announced on Tuesday that the company is also donating $25 million in relief to independent local restaurant and nightlife businesses.
