For on-the-ground experiences that get you off the beaten path while also giving you an inside look into what life is actually like in that location, seek out classes and tours led by locals that support marginalized people and groups in that community.

Arts and Culture Tour in Bronx, New York

Credit: Steven Greaves/Getty Images

The South Bronx isn’t typically high on many travelers’ lists of places to visit, but the Bronx Council of the Arts seeks to change that with their Bronx Trolley Arts and Culture Tour. It takes place on the first Wednesday of every month, and starts off with a wine and hors d’oeurves meet-and-greet reception at the Longwood Gallery. Afterward, hop on the trolley and enjoy stops at galleries, theaters, and community spaces to get a sense of the area’s thriving cultural scene. The tour is free, so participating does not directly support the community financially—unless you buy something along the way—but it does bring attention to their work.

There is a no-photo policy, guides are locals from underprivileged communities, and groups are kept small.
