But to get you started, we’ll give you five can’t-miss Big Apple diversions. While traditional sights are always on offer (a tour of Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, a show on Broadway) New York City is always buzzing with new and underrated attractions. Walk along the High Line—a strip of elevated, abandoned rail track that was converted into a 1.45-mile park in 2009—and enjoy the interactive art installations. The Whitney Museum’s new, Renzo Piano-designed home can be found at the promenade’s southernmost end. No matter what you decide to do in New York City, you should consider your meals wisely. You can grab a three-course lunch at Del Posto, from Iron Chef Mario Batali, for only $49 (a serious bargain, especially by New York standards) or splurge on a feast at the Michelin-starred Eleven Madison Park in the landmarked Metropolitan Life North building. No matter what you eat, conclude dinner with a cocktail at Bemelmans Bar in The Carlyle Hotel, or the Top of the Standard—which boasts some of the best views in the city. Other New York City sights worth seeing are the Tenement Museum, which reveals what immigrant life was like on the Lower East Side at the turn of the 20th century, and the New Museum. Be sure to venture outside Manhattan: Queens is home to the Hall of Science and the Queens Zoo, and Brooklyn is the secret hideout of New York’s best pizza. Insider Tip: order the Lady Pizza Girl white pizza from Emily in Clinton Hill. It comes topped with ricotta, Havarti, mushrooms, pickled chili, mixed herbs, and basil.
