Your hotel experience can make or break a business trip. Are you getting stuck in the room next to the ice machine, or welcomed with an upgrade to a suite? Accrue enough points with a hotel loyalty program, and it could well be the latter.

The key is finding the right programs. They can vary widely in the perks they offer—and how long it takes for those perks to kick in.

So where should you be booking your hotel stays to get the biggest loyalty bang for your buck? That’s the question we posed to travelers who took the 2014 Best in Business Travel Survey that we conducted with Fortune.
