I love to charter a sailboat from Los Angeles and head out to Santa Catalina Island. There are wonderful places for snorkeling in Avalon Bay.

Ventnor, a small town on the New Jersey shore, has cute lifeguards, no bars, and great cheese-steak subs. Atlantic City's gambling is one town over, while that truly extraordinary tourist attraction, Lucy the Elephant (a six-story building shaped like a pachyderm), is in nearby Margate.

There's a swimming spot called the Blue Hole on the upper Ocoee River in Tennessee that captures everything summer is about. It takes me back to being 12 again.

Without question, it's the island of Armona, a 10-minute ferry ride from the fishing village of Olhão in Portugal's Algarve region. There are no schedules—just three-hour lunches of octopus, grilled sardines, and vinho verde.

The northern part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula is my favorite. The Carriage House Inn in Clare County has lush herb and flower gardens and acres of wooded trails. I found it on the Web three years ago and have been back every summer since.

Just south of San Diego is Silver Strand State Beach Park. My husband and I take our teak beach chairs, two diet Cokes with lots of ice, and a Mexican blanket in case there's a chill. We can sit for hours with our toes dug into the sand, watching people, seabirds, and sailboats.

To me, Cooperstown, New York, has it all: wide-open spaces, ideal weather, lots of social, cultural, and sports activities, and terrific antiques shopping. I'm never stressed or unhappy in this village of museums.
