Eero Saarinen's celebrated 1964 Illinois headquarters for Deere & Co.—a favorite with architourists—now has an innovative neighbor across the Mississippi River, in downtown Davenport, Iowa: the stunningly modern $42.1 million Figge Art Museum (; 536/326-7804; opening Aug. 6) that has replaced the smaller Davenport Museum. London-based minimalist David Chipperfield designed the new building, which sits on the riverfront like a cut-crystal sculpture atop a two-story pedestal (elevated to protect the structure against floods). Regionalist paintings by the likes of Grant Wood will share space with a preeminent collection of Mexican colonial paintings, one of the largest outside Mexico City. The museum's Winter Garden offers some amazing panoramas of the Mississippi and the surrounding landscape.
