In honor of Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 20th birthday, T+L Cruise Editor Jane Wooldridge spoke with Mark Conroy, the President of Regent Seven Seas Cruises with 38 years in the industry.

Q: What was your first cruise-related job?

A: While attending the University of Miami in 1973, I worked weekends on the pier at NCL. We delivered and picked up the ships’ mail, assisted guests going through customs, ran errands, and sold baggage insurance. I also worked part time in the mail room.

Q: What makes cruising on Regent different from cruising on other luxury lines? Are there signatures or hallmarks that someone wouldn't find elsewhere, or would automatically associate with a distinctive Regent experience?

A: First and foremost, it’s the all-inclusive nature of our product—and the caring nature of the staff onboard. The facilities of our mid-size ships are large enough to offer substantial suites, a variety of dining facilities, entertainment and relaxation—but still small enough to offer personal service. Last but not least: our port intensive worldwide itineraries allow guests to visit some of the most fascinating destinations in the world.

Q: Tell us about plans for the brand going forward. New ships? New itineraries?

A: We will have spent over $100 million since 2008 improving the product. This month Seven Seas Navigator will complete a dry-dock where we will replace all soft good, balcony decks, and create our new evening casual dining experience. This new concept will allow guests to enjoy Italian antipasti, main course and desserts. Of course, we have a lot more in the works, but it's all top secret at the moment. Stay tuned!
