How one woman is traveling the world with her dog in a converted van
Marina Piro is on a mission to become a “self-sufficient forest fairy.” And by the looks of her Instagram account, she is well on her way.
The 20-something woman from Italy is on a whirlwind global adventure with her two best friends: Odie, her rescue dog, and Pam, her converted van.
As MyModernMet reported, Piro purchased the five-door 2001 Renault Kangoo in 2015. She then gradually began the arduous renovation project, first ripping out and installing new flooring, then adding a bed, a kitchen, and a few twinkling lights. Throughout it all she has kept fans up to date on her site, PamTheVan.com.
While Piro admitted that she actually enjoys “turbulent flights” on her site, she was willing to forgo that joy in order to bring her four-legged friend along for the epic journey.
As she explained on her site: “The main reason why I chose to be traveling by van was that I wanted to have Odie with me. A van seemed the most viable option. Too many bus, train, plane companies do not accept dogs, not to mention the difficulties you might have to find a suitable accommodation.”
Piro does warn that traveling with a dog may be difficult for some people. She suggests asking yourself a few questions about your canine companion before hopping in the car and driving off into the sunset. Questions include: How does he/she cope with new places? Will you have enough space? Are you willing to adjust your travel plans?
Beyond her tips for traveling with a pet, Piro also dishes out advice on how to shower on the road (it’s easier than you think) and how to make money during your travels (remote work and seasonal jobs are key).
