After a much-needed face-lift by Polshek Partnership Architects, the Yale University Art Gallery—Louis Kahn’s understated 1953 masterwork—reopened last December, pared down and restored to its original loftlike proportions. The building is suffused with light as varied as the art it illuminates. From works by Italian masters (such as Jacopo da Pontormo’s Madonna del Libro, circa 1545-46) to a petroleum-jelly dumbbell by alumnus Matthew Barney, the collection now also includes 1,600 contemporary works acquired over the past five years. Another highlight: the sub-Saharan African art on the second floor.
