New York’s New Cashmere Shop
Comfort junkies visiting New York’s SoHo can get a seriously luxurious fix at Meg Cohen Design Shop (59 Thompson St.; 917/805-0189; www.megcohendesign.com), the knitwear maven’s first boutique. The shoebox-size store brims with delicate cashmere striped scarves, of-the-moment fingerless gloves, and Cohen’s signature travel-perfect serapes and wraps. Also find a few of Cohen’s favorite things: Japanese-style tray tables and coasters, back and current issues of Granta, and handcrafted correspondence cards from R. Nichols. New shops in Tokyo, Paris, and London are planned for 2009, but if you wait, you’ll be left out in the cold.
Meg Cohen Design Shop
Vibrant and youthful, this small SoHo shop sells colorful knitted garments from eponymous designer Meg Cohen, as well as an eclectic variety of handpicked vintage accessories and home furnishings. After earning a following with her double-fringed cashmere scarves sold at various New York stores, Cohen opened her own namesake shop in a white-walled space formerly occupied by Kate Spade. Displayed in carefully designed vignettes, the inventory ranges from scarves and ski hats to striped angora blankets and fingerless gloves (perfect for smart phone users). Vintage items may include cufflinks, piggy banks, and old-fashioned telephones.
