“The Naxos Quartets” Southbank Centre (October 9–11). They may bethe first set of string quartets named after a record label. Naxos commissioned the eminentcomposer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies to write a cycle that turned into 10 quartets Davies calls“a novel in chapters,” and that bear, novel-like, references to the past quartetliterature (including the Beethoven quartets), current events, and landscapes from SirPeter’s life. The entire opus is being offered over one weekend at the SouthbankCentre’s Purcell Room, in the same populist spirit that Naxos (sometimes referred to as abudget label) embodies: tickets sell for $8 and $15 apiece.
