The Nashville-based Anderson Design Group toiled for five years to create a comprehensive portfolio of illustrated posters for each of the country's 59 protected parks—from Hawaii Volcanoes to the U.S. Virgin Islands—in time for the Park Service's centennial. For several beloved parks, multiple designs are available. The images are graphic and colorful, with a nostalgic style that recalls early-20th-century Art Deco travel posters and the commercial illustration of the Works Progress Administration era. Each offers a rich, emotional depiction of a particular park moment or experience: cacti silhouetted against a setting sun in Arizona's Saguaro National Park; a couple in California's Redwood National Park gazing up at the majestic trees; a horseman in Bryce Canyon pausing to contemplate the view; Yellowstone's Old Faithful captured mid-eruption. Prints start at $39 and can be purchased framed.
For those who want to collect images from all the parks, there is also 59 Illustrated National Parks, the studio's sumptuous 160-page coffee-table book, which pairs the images with historic photographs, maps, trivia, and more. It sells for $49.99.
Here are some of our favorite illustrations from the collection.
