Halekulani Hotel
I always spend a few days in Honolulu—it’s the ideal blend of city and sea. The divine Halekulani Hotel is right on Waikiki Beach and close to some of the best restaurants and shops.

Pig & the Lady
One of my favorite dishes is the pho French dip at the Pig & the Lady, a braised brisket sandwich that you dunk in Vietnamese-style broth.

Plumeria Beach House
Another must: lunch on the terrace at Plumeria Beach House at the Kahala Resort, a short drive from Waikiki. I always order the Kahala burger—it comes with a fried egg, bacon, and guacamole—and check out the dolphins in the lagoon before I leave.

Hound & Quail
The quirky Hound & Quail stocks vintage and modern furniture. There’s always something I never knew I needed—like a taxidermied deer head.

Manu Antiques
I enjoy browsing the vintage aloha shirts and Hawaiian silver jewelry at Manu Antiques.

Shangri La
While I’m happy sitting on the beach with a stack of magazines, it’s worth spending a few hours at Doris Duke’s former estate, Shangri La, with its gardens and collection of Islamic art.

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai
When time allows, I fly over to the Big Island for a day or two. The traditional lomilomi massage at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai leaves me feeling completely re-energized. And a helicopter ride around the island’s black volcanic landscape reminds me that Hawaii is like no place else on earth.
