No one wants to travel during the holidays. Even outside of Europe, getting from point A to B can quickly turn nightmarish. How about this: Stay home until the Christmas surge has safely passed, then head against the traffic for a New Year's weekend. While your patdown- and scanner-weary pals are coming home, you'll enjoy shorter lines getting out of town.

To help your wintery scheme come to fruition, several hotels, resorts, and even entire islands have put together New Year's Eve packages. Below, a small sampling.

- The Caribbean's coolest undiscovered island, Curaçao, is holding its first-ever New Year's Eve Fest. Personally, I'd skip the Brian McKnight performance, but there's loads more to do on this quaint but kickin' wee paradise. The Renaissance Curaçao (a Marriott property) is offering special weekend packages, and Continental now flies direct from NYC twice weekly. From other cities, expect a quick connection through Miami.

- If you don't feel like bringing your passport, there are still plenty of domestic options. Particularly when one of America's largest hotel collections is offering deep discounts during the first days of 2011. After you've damaged your wallet (and liver) on New Year's Eve, turn to the nice folks at Red Roof for comfort. They're offering a "Nicest Price" of just $20.11 for stays on Sunday, January 2, 2011. (Yes, start practicing now: 2011.) Use code "VP+608790" when booking online at

-If you absolutely insist on coming into New York City for New Year's Eve (why, oh why?), the Westin Times Square has a $50 coupon for BAR 10 for any guests who stay through Sunday night (details here). And the lovely W Hotel New York is dangling 3,000 bonus Starpoints for those guests who stick around until Monday morning (details here).
