After the Balkan conflict ended in 1995, Europeans rushed to buy inexpensive property on Croatia's islands and the Dalmatian Coast. But it's not too late for Americans to get in on the action- prices remain rock-bottom. Ocean-view apartments start at just $60,000; beachfront houses begin at $120,000. Islands such as Brac and Hvar are about a two-hour ferry ride from Split, while Korcula is only three hours by ferry from the walled city of Dubrovnik. Both Split and Dubrovnik have international airports that serve Rome and Frankfurt directly and offer connections through Croatia's capital of Zagreb from London and New York. Yachting and fishing are the favorite outdoor pastimes; you can hike or sea kayak in any of seven national parks. Purchasing property in Croatia does require patience- ownership documents can take a year to process- but the undiscovered beaches and inexpensive luxuries make it well worth the wait.
