Take a Virtual Drive in Cities Around the World While Listening to Local Radio (Video)
Start the morning in Tokyo then take an afternoon drive in New York.
Don’t you miss the feeling of cranking your car radio and just taking an afternoon drive? We all do.
Since countries around the world grapple with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, people are appreciating the little things they got to experience before quarantine, including the feeling of driving around a city and taking in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
While you can’t set off on a vacation to the city of your choice quite yet, there is still a way to see the sights of cities around the world from the comfort of home.
Drive & Listen, a new app by student Erkam Şeker, allows anyone to take a virtual drive around one of the app’s 38 available cities, taking in the sights and sounds of the street as well as local radio stations, Lonely Planet reported.
Şeker is originally from Istanbul, Turkey, but is studying for his Master’s in Munich, Germany, according to Lonely Planet. Şeker told Lonely Planet that he originally thought of the app as a reaction to feeling homesick, but it also serves as a way for antsy travelers to enjoy the feeling of going abroad or just to provide a new way to explore a city you’ve never been to.
“I was missing riding around my city, even the traffic and the fuss of daily life, so I found myself watching videos of Istanbul,” Şeker told Lonely Planet, “It was so fun to see my city but I thought why not listen to some radio in the background to get the whole riding in cars experience? I realized that other people around the world must be missing that same experience of being on the road.”
The app takes you on tours of streets in cities like Paris, New York, London, Beijing, Istanbul, Tokyo, and many more. Some drives include major points of interest in certain cities, such as the Spanish steps or the Colosseum in Rome or Tokyo Tower in Tokyo.
“I am adding new cities almost every day," Şeker told Lonely Planet. Şeker uses YouTube and dashcam footage to create the drives. “People around the world message me and ask how they can contribute.” Not only can you customize the speed, but also toggle sounds of the road on and off, as well as choose which radio station you’d like to hear.
