David Lefevre is making waves with Fishing with Dynamite, his seafood restaurant in Manhattan Beach, California. He’s even been shortlisted for this year’s James Beard Awards—the “Oscars of the food world”—in the category of Best Chef: West. We caught up with him last week when he cooked at New York City’s esteemed James Beard House, where he shared with T+L his perfect day of L.A. eating.

Breakfast:Huckleberry. I love the poached egg with tomato white bean ragout and their breads. It's so sunny and calm and the menu is simple and rustic.

Lunch:Hinoki and the Bird, where you have to order the caramel-braised pork belly sandwich with collard greens and pickles; return for dinner another night and get the Sambal skate wing.

Afternoon Snack: “Ice cream at Sweet Rose Creamery—try their verve coffee flavor, or maybe salted caramel.

Dinner:Shinsengumi yakitori in Torrance. It’s a fun, friendly space with awesome chicken liver and beef tongue yakitori.

Dessert: “Anything by Jordan Kahn at Red Medicine is pretty phenomenal. The Redwood Ice is a cool concoction composed of almond praline, red currant, orange blossom, and violet.”

L.A. in a single dish: Tacos de Guisado. It’s my favorite! Get it at Tacos La Catrina.

Foodie Souvenir: “Jam from SQIRL—they have flavors such as strawberry/rose and blackberry/Meyer lemon—and a salt holder from Heath Ceramics.”
