Cape Town Chic
When globe-trotting travel consultant Niels van Rheenen's collection of Art Deco furniture outgrew his Amsterdam house, he packed up his club chairs, modular bookcases, and French 1920's lamps and went in search of space. He found ample room in a neglected, rambling house overlooking Cape Town's Hout Bay. No two of Hout Bay Hideaway's five suites are the same (Argentinean paintings and a Belgian desk in one, kilims in another), and there are no hotel-style rules: guests help themselves to the open bar and see as much, or as little, of van Rheenen as they want. Those in search of utter privacy can book the entire place, as well as one of van Rheenen's vintage Jaguars. Hout Bay Hideaway Cape Town, Scott Estate, Hout Bay; 27-21/790-8040, fax 27-21/790-8114; www.houtbay-hideaway.com; doubles from $70.
