This summer, Amtrak wants you to get out and explore America with your friends. It’s even willing to share a massive group discount to entice you.

Amtrak announced Wednesday its new Share Fares as a way for customers to bring family and friends on Amtrak adventures for less.

Starting April 24, groups of travelers can purchase tickets using the Share Fares discount for travel beginning on April 27. With the offer, discounts increase as the number of travelers increases. So, while the first traveler pays full price, the second traveler will receive a 15 percent discount, the third will receive a 60 percent discount, and the fourth will get 70 percent off the base price of a ticket. That means the entire group gets 35 percent off if they split the cost of the tickets.

Beyond group travel discounts, Amtrak is also hoping to attract more customers with revamped stations and infrastructure throughout the nation.

“Recognizing the desire for customers to get more out of every moment,” Amtrak President and CEO Richard Anderson said in a statement, “we’ve put significant investments into our stations, equipment, and infrastructure to improve the overall experience and give our customers the opportunity to rediscover train travel.”

The Share Fares are valid for travel on the Amtrak Northeast Regional from Washington, D.C., to Boston, and on the national network on some of the most popular trains, including the California Zephyr, Capitol Limited, City of New Orleans, Cardinal, Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, Texas Eagle, Coast Starlight, Lake Shore Limited, Palmetto, Silver Star, Silver Meteor, and Crescent. The discount is not valid on the Acela Express and Auto Train.

As for the fine print, the offer is available for up to four customers traveling together on the same itinerary and is available at Fares are one-way (adult) and no additional discounts can be applied. Reservations using the discount must also be made three days in advance The discount is also only valid for coach seats and no upgrades are allowed.

So long as you plan ahead, you could get to your destination a whole lot cheaper with more friends by your side this summer.
