Few foods are as comfortable or as laid back as pizza. For most it brings back memories of childhood birthday parties, Superbowl Sundays, and drunken nights in college. To be honest, pizza never gets old. It’s an American tradition that shows how happy most of us are to eat good food with our hands. Here in New Orleans things are no different. Most tourists who have experienced “Bourbon Street Pizza” know all too well that some things are better left uneaten. Thankfully there are loads of great pizza spots all over town and even one on Bourbon Street! You don’t have to eat jambalaya and crawfish to do it like the locals do. All you need is to go to one of these amazing pizza spots and grab a beer and a slice. Because in New Orleans, it’s all about the little things that make life great.

Dolce Vita

Fired on a hand-made oven from Italy, the pizzas here are nothing short of spectacular. The owner, Charlie is almost always around and gives a superb customer experience. They have a hefty local beer selection and even Mexican coke! Have kids with you? They have a menu just for them that will make even the pickiest eaters happy.

Owner and Executive Chef Alon Shaya recently won a James Beard award for Best Chef in the South and for good reason. His pizza is mind-blowing. Domenica is also home to one of the most lucrative happy hours in the downtown area. Between 2-5PM pizzas are half-off as well as beer, wine, and well-cocktails.

On the newly revived Freret Street uptown is Ancora, a casual pizza joint that easily rivals the best pizza places in New Orleans. They use fresh, local ingredients to craft their pizza and it really shows. At the bar ask for resident barman Bryn Thompson, who makes fantastic cocktails to go with your dinner.

The Dough Bowl

Commonly referred to as Boot Pizza (after the club next door), this late night spot is a favorite among Tulane and Loyola students. A disclaimer: it is not high end pizza. But after a late night drinking at infamous dive, Snake & Jake’s, few things satisfy better than folding one of their giant slices in half and cramming it into your face.

Vieux Carre Pizza

Scores of people know the magic and the horror of Bourbon Street pizza. Get it right and it can be downright magical. But get it wrong and it can quickly go from tasty pizza to tasty pizza on the sidewalk. Vieux Carre Pizza wins the category of best Bourbon Street pizza hands down. Ask for their Bourbon Special, made with chicken, spinach, pesto, and feta cheese.
