A Mexico vacation just isn’t complete without some tequila. Mexico’s most popular cocktail, the margarita, is made with tequila, lime, and orange-flavored Triple Sec liqueur—and you’re missing out of you come to Cancun and never try one. With Cancun’s tropical heat, it’s no wonder visitors search out the very best and coldest margaritas the city has to offer, but you might have to leave your resort to get the real deal. Throughout downtown Cancun and the exciting Hotel Zone, you’ll come across endless bars and restaurants serving a wide variety of refreshing and creative margaritas to keep you cool during your tropical beach vacation, but there are only a few that serve a margarita worth writing home about. From classic margarita recipes to flavored versions created by local bartenders—from casual Mexican eateries to the destination’s most luxurious resorts—here are the best margaritas you’ll find in Cancun.

La Destileria

You’d expect a restaurant with its own tequila distillery and museum (and over 100 tequilas) to have great margaritas, and La Destileria does not disappoint. Its central location in the Hotel Zone makes La Destileria a popular choice for people visiting Cancun, and the restaurant’s margaritas are considered by most to be the very best in town. For a unique flavor, try the tamarindo margarita, made from the tart tamarind fruit.

La Habichuela Downtown

This iconic Mayan-inspired Cancun restaurant can be found in the very heart of the downtown area, offering a charming indoor-outdoor setting for a romantic dinner. La Habichuela Downtown is best known for its beautiful ambiance and authentic menu, which includes traditional Yucatan Peninsula cuisine, Mexican dishes, and some pretty enticing margaritas.

Of course they have good margaritas: it’s right there in the name! Try the Big Rita if you’re feeling adventurous, or choose one of the more unique signature recipes from the margarita menu. Margaritaville is the place to go when you want to experience a lively meal or a crazy night out during your beach vacation.

Ritz Carlton Cancun

The elegant Ritz Carlton Cancun serves up a vast array of innovative recipes, including an enticing margarita list. The classic “Margarita the Ritz Carlton” comes most highly recommended, but you can also branch out and try some of the hotel’s signature margaritas made with some pretty bold ingredients. The restaurants and bars at this hotel are open to non-guests, so you don’t have to stay at the hotel to enjoy one of these margaritas.

La Parrilla

Situated on the famous Avenida Yaxchilan in Downtown Cancun, La Parrilla is one of Cancun’s oldest and best restaurants. Along with authentic Mexican cuisine, mariachi bands and mouthwatering tacos, it also has some tasty margaritas. For a unique flavor, try the Margarita Dorada (Golden Margarita), which includes Grand Marnier.
