Best Celebrity Spotting in the Bahamas

The high tourist season, which runs from November to March, is the most active time for everything if you’re a tourist in the Bahamas—and that includes celebrity spotting. But year-round here, you may see music video shoots or scenes being filmed for feature films or television shows. And professional athletes love to cool down in the Bahamas, so off-season stops or post-win celebratory retreats often take place in the Bahamas.

Aside from its natural beauty and romantic appeal, celebrities love the Bahamas for two primary reasons: the privacy available amongst our 700 islands and—oddly enough—our indifference when it comes to superstars. Yes, celebrities are still treated with an automatic deference, but beyond a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service when dealing with wealthy people (since the tips are ginormous), Bahamians don't typically get star-struck. Celebrities come and go, passing through our islands, without much fanfare, as Bahamians for the most part mind their own business. So do as the Bahamians do when you are celebrity spotting in our islands and keep your cool. But do check out these five hot spots to increase your chances of having a lucky encounter.

The Cove, Atlantis

Hang around poolside by Cain at The Cove and you are bound to run into a celebrity, whether it is a basketball player like Dwayne Wade with his wife Gabrielle Union, a movie star, or billboard chart-topping performer like Jennifer Hudson. They may be tucked away behind a private beach cabana, so if you miss them there, then head to Nobu restaurant on the casino floor or Aura nightclub.

One&Only Ocean Club

If it's good enough for James Bond, then it is just right for a celebrity. (I just made that up, but the saying is true.) James Bond has a storied relationship with this luxury resort, which made its latest cameo appearance in Casino Royale. Although the property has super-secluded hideouts, you stand a good chance of running into a famous face dining at Dune or the Pool Terrace Café. Beyoncé and Jay-Z are rumored to love the place, along with Angela Bassett and Kerry Washington.

Harbour Island

Above all other islands, Harbour Island is probably the celebrity destination in the Bahamas. The island strikes a delicate balance when it comes to providing down-home island flavor for those with exquisite tastes. It is modern yet remote; quaint and full of character. Supermodels (like former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Elle MacPherson) are always having photo shoots on the famous pink-sand beach. Among the other A-listers who frequent the island are Michael Dell, Tyra Banks, Jennifer Aniston, and Cameron Diaz.

Lyford Cay

You need an invitation to get behind the gates at Lyford Cay, an ultra-lavish residential community on the western tip of New Providence Island. If you manage to get past security, you will enter a world of seasoned wealth. Sean Connery (who famously played James Bond in seven films), and billionaire financier and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club owner Joe Lewis are just a couple of the esteemed faces you will find chilling at home amongst the 300 estates here.

Old Fort Bay

Australian tennis pro Lleyton Hewitt owns a home in this gated luxury community on New Providence Island; so do a few other boldfaced names. The property takes its name from an actual fort, built in the 1700s, when the Bahamas was a bastion of skullduggery thanks to war going on between the British and lawless pirates, privateers and buccaneers of the era. At the Old Fort Club, the children of celebrities now climb and play on the cast-iron cannons that keep history alive.
