If you’ve dreamed of wandering the cobblestone streets and admiring the incredible art and architecture in the charming Swiss city of Basel, next year might just be the best time to do it.
In 2018, the city will be offering visitors who stay overnight a free BaselCard which is good for free public transportation and Wi-Fi, as well as big discounts on theaters, city tours and more.
While the cards are being funded by raising the tourism tax, that increase is relatively small, from 3.50 Swiss francs to 4. The return for travelers who take advantage of all the city has to offer will be much bigger than the investment.
Travelers will be able to get 50-percent discounts on many of the city’s cultural offerings, including theaters, guided city tours, the zoo, a boat trip across the Rhine, and Basel's 40 museums.
Christoph Bosshardt, head of marketing for Basel Tourimus, told Oyster that a pilot program in the summer showed more than 40 percent of travelers would consider extending their stay if they had the BaselCard.
