Emphasizing spa amenities and personalized service, these design-driven fitness centers are destinations in their own right, and more are in the works. Here, the women behind them reveal their travel-fitness tips— and how they walk off long flights with a spring in their step.

THE GURU Annbeth Eschbach opened the first Exhale (980 Madison Ave. and 150 Central Park S., New York, N.Y.; 212/249-3000), a "mind-body spa," in fall 2003. A Boston locationis slated for December, with other openings across the United States in 2005.
HOW SHE TRAVELS "I get into trouble for it, but I practice standing yoga poses at the back of the plane."
IN HER CARRY-ON Bottled water, a piece of grilled chicken ("I never eat airplane food"), and Exhale's facial kit ($70). "It takes three minutes and leaves my face feeling as smooth as a baby's."
FAVORITE PLACE TO GET FIT "I like to ski in Jackson Hole. It's demanding— a no-nonsense kind of place."

THE GURU Lavinia Errico is best known for starting the super-chain Equinox with her brothers, in 1991. "Working out should not be your hobby," she says. THE GURU Robin Brown wanted to create "a total health and fitness center." Clay (25 W. 14th St., New York, N.Y.; 212/206-9200) has an on-site nutritionist, a spa, and a roof deck with a pool table.
HOW SHE TRAVELS "If I'm going to be putting on a bathing suit, I'll take extra Pilates classes beforehand. But once I get there, I don't overdo it."
