Principal and Cofounder of West 8, Adriaan Geuze, on Top Travel Trends for 2015
Principal and cofounder of West 8, an urban design and landscape architecture firm, on what cities will look like.
Q: How is urban planning changing?
A: The 19th century brought romantic parks to many cities, where children play and people walk their dogs. I’m interested in the next generation of urban havens. Our project on New York’s longneglected Governors Island is a good example, with an undulating park and astonishing harbor views.
Q: Are you noticing any trends?
A: I’m seeing a fundamental new approach to vehicular traffic. A vital city allows cars, but not at the expense of human scale. At Toronto’s revitalized waterfront, another West 8 project, cars, public transport, cyclists, and pedestrians now share space, which makes for a healthier and better integrated city.
Q: What service is desperately missing in cities?
A: Better transportation between airports and city centers. Destinations are great, but getting there can be terrible.
