Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, which was confirmed early Wednesday after a tight race with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, has been plastered on the front covers of the world’s newspapers.
The Republican candidate swept to victory in a surprise result that followed months of bitter and divisive campaigning, with Clinton conceding defeat in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Newspaper outlets around the world have printed reactions to the result across their front pages, with many expressing shock at one of the biggest surprises in modern political history.
Spanish publication El Periódico printed the headline “God forgive America” in front of a gesturing Trump, while Britain’s the Guardian called the race “a brutal contest that has riven America.” Daily French newspaper Libération simply printed the word “Trumpocalypse”.
Closer to home, “Trump Triumphs” covers the front pages of the New York Times and the Washington Post. The New York Daily News emblazoned the title “House of Horrors” across an image of the White House, to which Trump has been invited by President Obama for a meeting on Thursday.
