Someone Stole a Human Toe From a Bar in Canada
“This was our new toe, and it was a really good one.”
The Downtown Hotel in Dawson City, Yukon, is famous for its Sourtoe Cocktail. Famous because it literally has a human toe floating in it.
Tourists flock to the hotel to “kiss the toe,” but every so often, someone has to ruin the, er, fun for everyone.
On the night of Saturday, June 17, a man came into the bar for the famous drink and stole the famous toe when he left — a big faux pas.
Police are offering a reward for anyone who brings “The Toe” back. Apparently, the man in question was from Quebec and even left his Sourtoe Cocktail certificate (which is given to customers who try the cocktail) at the bar, so police know the name of the thief.
“We are furious,” the hotel’s Toe Captain, Terry Lee, said in a statement. “Toes are very hard to come by. Stunts like this adversely affect the whole community, not just the Downtown Hotel. We fortunately have a couple of back up toes, but we really need this one back.”
Apparently, the man stopped into the hotel after the designated “Toe Time,” when the cocktail is served, between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. and demanded the drink. The bartender served him anyway out of courtesy, and he even joked about stealing the toe before leaving.
According to the CBC, this particular toe was donated by a man who had to have it surgically removed and it was cured in salt for 6 months.
“This was our new toe, and it was a really good one. We just started using it this weekend,” hotel manager Geri Coulbourne told the CBC.
The hotel's posted fine for swallowing or stealing the toe is $2,500. Until August 2013, it had been $500, but it was raised when another patron swallowed the toe, apparently in one gulp.
