Drones are expensive; there's no getting around that. But there is an option for those looking to take great aerial selfies and shots that don't include throwing your defenseless camera up into the air and hoping for a good angle.

If you've got a GoPro, you're going to want to know about AER. The gadget was funded on Kickstarter in November 2016, and is now available for pre-order. But before you pull out that credit card, let's do some digging into what this thing even is.

AER looks like a Nerf football, and for good reason. It was designed to protect the GoPro camera specifically, while also being aerodynamic enough to be thrown into the air gracefully, snap some photos or video, and gently make its way back to the ground.

Youtuber Nicolas Vuignier has appropriately named this "the poor man's selfie drone" — and it really is, considering it'll only put you back about $53 — and demonstrated how to use it. Check out the video above.

If you were one of those who loved to toss the football to yourself growing up, this is going to come as second nature. It seems like there would be some learning curve when it comes the timing of your throw, but that's all part of the fun.
