As a city person, when I really want to get away, I find that nothing beats those locations that combine natural beauty with a bit of luxury. The dream is to unplug from the world and recharge my batteries with a little time in the sand and sun.
I love that there's beauty everywhere in Big Sur, but it's also very laid-back. The best part? There's almost no cell reception. The views are mesmerizing, even if you've been there a hundred times. Phuket has long been one of my favorite destinations. I go to Capri at least twice a year—usually in the fall and spring because that's when I'm in Italy for work, and the island is at its most beautiful and peaceful. The simple pleasures of life there are so abundant—the sun, the sea, the unforgettable plates of pasta—it's impossible to not be happy. Here, my favorite spots to stay, eat, and do.
My perfect day includes a morning massage at Post Ranch Inn & Spa, brunch at Deetjen's, and an afternoon at Pfeiffer Beach, followed by a sunset drink at Nepenthe. If I could, I'd commute from Big Sur every day.
The Grand Hotel Quisisana has a glamorous history—Jackie Onassis used to stay there. Of course, I shop in Capri, too: Da Costanzo (39-081/837-8077) and Canfora sell handmade sandals, while Carthusia stocks divine lemon soap. And I never leave without a few Borsalino hats.
