Celebrities travel more than most of us, which is why we often find ourselves looking to them for travel-style inspiration—but even they get it wrong sometimes. While the ladies have a tendency to take it a tad over the top, men err on the side of, well, sloppy. We’ve rounded up a compilation of the dos and don’ts of airport style, so you won’t repeat any of these high-profile fashion faux pas. Scroll through to see our ultimate compilation of the dos and don’ts of airport style, as seen on our favorite celebrities.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Don’t: Dress for Summer Weather
When it comes to mastering street style, nobody does it better than Rosie While she looks on-point for a night out on the town, skintight black pants and open-toed heels don’t exactly scream ‘airplane friendly’—even if you are heading toward tropical temperatures. Furthermore, Rosie’s exposed chest and arms mean she’s likely to get chilly while up in the air.

Do: Layer (Of Course)
Rosie’s second look is all about practicality; she’s thrown on a chambray shirt over a basic white tee—a perfect option for those of you who may be landing somewhere warm but are prone to mid-flight chills—and swapped out her stilettos for sneakers.

Don’t: Wear Leather Pants
Perhaps the first rule of airport-style 101 should be no leather pants—ever. We can’t think of a more uncomfortable garment to be confined for hours at a time. The Pretty Little Liars actress looks ready for a day of high-end winter shopping in NYC, but her suffocating black ensemble and Morgan Clifford leopard coat are all wrong for travel.

Do: Wear/Bring a Leather Jacket
If you really don’t want to ditch the leather, stick to jackets—that way, the heaviness of the material won’t bulk up your suitcase. Pair it with leggings and a t-shirt (or a light weight sweater, depending on your destination) like Miss Benson does in her second look for a more effortless vibe.

Selena Gomez

Don’t: Wear Your Highest Heels
The pop star’s business-chic inspired outfit would fit right in at a catering gig, not so much on an airplane. Her ultra high-waisted trousers look painfully cumbersome, and those heeled pumps perilous. Case and point: Try frantically running around a terminal in those bad boys.

Do: Sport a Pair of Zip-Up Boots
You can’t go wrong with the classic stretch legging-cozy sweater combo, as exhibited in Selena’s airplane-friendly second look. While traveling, zip-up ankle boots are your best footwear friend: they’re consistently stylish and easy to take on and off at security checkpoints.

Candice Swanepoel

Don’t: Wear All White
While we don’t think we’ve ever seen the Victoria’s Secret stunner look bad in anything, Candice’s all-white attire is impractical for travel. She is asking to get a bit dirty (we all know that airports aren’t winning any awards for cleanliness anytime soon). As stunning as they are, her high-waisted pants and heeled sandals look like the opposite of what we’d want to be snuggled up in at 40,000 feet.

Do: Be Afraid to Go Super Casual
This time around, Candice is embracing comfort, pairing relaxed jeans with classic Chuck Taylor All-Star's. To finish off the casual look, Candice has paired a loose-fitting tee with a jacket, which is smartly tied around her waist. Doing so has not only ensured that she’ll be kept warm, but the jacket can also double as a makeshift travel pillow.

Jessica Alba

Don’t: Dress for the Office
Leather and mesh and heels, oh my! While the actress and businesswoman manages to pull off this look with ease, it wouldn’t be our first pick for a day of flying. Jessica looks confined by her leather pants and her mesh top is bound to have her grabbing for a blanket, stat.

Do: Mix Patterns and Layers
Going for a much more relaxed vibe in her second look, Jessica’s chosen to bundle up with loose layers. A pair of baggy (but not sloppy, i.e., sweatpants) pants are ideal for travel, and the contrast between the grey and army-green hues keep Miss Alba looking stylish.

Ian Somerhalder

Don’t: Wear (Only) a White Tank
Mr. Somerhalder—or Smolderhalder, as fans prefer—looks good in just about anything. However, wearing a white tank on a plane is unadvised—you can kiss any chances of being upgraded to business or first class good-bye.

Do: Look Put-Together
Opt for a more put together look: comfortable jeans, easy-to-slide-off boots, a form-fitting tee, and a jacket (or sweater) to keep you warm. And don’t forget to bring along your four-legged travel buddy!

Will Smith

Don’t: Mix Too Many Patterns
Even the Fresh Prince himself has trouble keeping it, well, fresh from time to time. Exhibit A: Will’s epic clash of prints and colors (although we’ll give him points for wearing a pocket-square on a flight.) While a suit isn’t an airplane style “don’t”—wearing one can potentially help in getting you one of those coveted surprise upgrades—pair it with a proper pair of shoes and a stylish carry-on.

Do: Rock a Comfortable Blazer
The actor nails his second airport look, however, opting for trendy kicks, an elegant blazer, and the ultimate airplane must-have: a scarf.

Ryan Gosling

Don’t: Go ‘Grungy’
Who knew Ryan Gosling could do wrong? His dirty shoes and hooded vest are just that. If you tend to gravitate towards hipster-inspired looks, think “Brooklyn chic” when prepping your in-flight outfit—which the actor masters in his second, much more gentlemanly look.

Do: Tote a Polished Carry-All
Wearing a warm coat on a plane is always a good idea—you never know when you’ll need that second blanket—and the layers underneath get an A+. Bonus points for replacing the worn-down backpack with a polished leather hold-all.

Jonah Hill

Don’t: Hide in a Hoodie
Everyone’s favorite funny guy scrubs up quite nicely when he makes the extra effort—but the pink hoodie, ball cap and worn jeans don’t do the Wolf of Wall Street star any favors.

Do: Go Monochrome
That being said, Jonah nails it with his all-navy look. Blazers will instantly elevate any outfit—just make sure to forego the temptation of wearing a tee underneath.

Christian Bale

Credit: Corbis

Don’t: Wear Flip-Flops
Christian Bale is undoubtedly one of the most handsome men in Hollywood, but he’s barely recognizable with his “I’ve been living alone on a deserted Island for the past six months” look. Board shorts and flip-flops are a general don’t when travelling; you’re bound to get chilly on the plane.

Do: Wear Fitted Jeans
If getting dressed up just isn’t your thing, take note from Batman himself and opt for a warm sweater, fitted jeans, and clean shoes. If there’s anything you take away from this, let is be that fitted denim will do wonders for your ensemble.

Shia LaBoeuf

Credit: Getty Images

Don’t: Wear Combat Boots
We can’t think of a more annoying shoe to take on and off at TSA checkpoints than combat boots. Mr. LaBoeuf gets the layer game right, but he looks a bit dirty, which could land you a spot on the most annoying travelers list.

Do: Wear Slip-On Sneakers
Shia cleans up impeccably when swapping his rugged coat/hoodie combo for a more polished (and much more comfortable-looking) navy jacket. He’s also traded in those combat boots for an easier to slip on sneaker and his color coordination rounds the look out perfectly.
