A powerful winter storm hit the East Coast this weekend, leaving at least nine people dead and 1.5 million homes and businesses without power, according to the Associated Press, as massive waves flooded coastlines and whopping winds tore through the northeast.

The nor'easter, an East Coast storm known for its aggressive winds and downpour of snow and rain, caused several airlines to cancel flights, including a number of airlines preemptively warning customers of delays and cancellations ahead of the storm. For flights that did take off, passengers and crew members experienced extreme turbulence, in one case causing nearly everyone on board a flight touching down at the Washington Dulles International Airport to throw up.

Dubbed Winter Storm Riley, the weather event also developed into a "bomb cyclone," a phenomenon that comes when atmospheric pressure drops by 24 millibars over a 24-hour period, thus intensifying the storm and risk for coastal flooding. Coastlines in Massachusetts and southern New York saw high tide flooding over the weekend, with streets in downtown Boston flooded to nearly historic highs.

Stunning photos taken along the East Coast during the tumultuous storm show massive waves smacking into the Massachusetts coast and people grasping their umbrellas as heavy winds and rainfall came down during their commutes.
