United Airlines Passenger Jet Shuts Down Newark Airport
No one was injured in the hard landing.
On Saturday, a United Airlines passenger plane landing at Newark Airport skidded off-course after getting multiple flat tires. None of the 166 passengers were injured or required medical attention, but the aircraft is being assessed for damage, according to a brand representative.
Many reports are sharing that the airplane slid off the runway, but a United Airlines rep has shared that the airplane “remained on the runway during the landing.” Photos of the incident show the airplane with its nose in the grassy median area on the runway. New York Daily News spoke with a spokeswoman from the Federal Aviation Administration who shared that the “21-year-old plane landed on runway 22 and then skidded off the left side of the pavement.”
Here is the full statement from United Airlines:
“United flight 627 from Denver to Newark, New Jersey experienced multiple flat tires upon landing in Newark. After landing, the aircraft became disabled which is currently affecting operations at Newark Airport. For those on the flight, we arranged transport for passengers from the aircraft to the airport terminal and paramedics were on site as a precaution. We’re in close touch with the FAA and airport authorities.”
As mentioned, there were flight delays at the airport due to this incident. Travelers took to Twitter to share their own photos and videos — as well as stories and complaints of their own delayed flights as a result of the incident:
Flights have since resumed, though there could be added delays.
