A Bus Full of Students Was in a Deadly Crash on the Way Home From Disney World
A trip to Disney World ended in tragedy Tuesday when a bus carrying Texas' Channelview High School band members home from the Florida amusement park drove off the road and into an Alabama ravine, leaving the driver dead and multiple passengers injured.
The bus, which had about 45 people on board, fell into a 50-foot-deep ravine just off Interstate 10, in Loxley, early Tuesday morning, the Associated Press reports. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear, officials said.
The bus driver was killed in the accident, and 10 other people were brought to Florida or Alabama hospitals by ambulance or helicopter, AP reports. First responders were forced to rappel into the chasm to rescue survivors, using "every piece of equipment on every truck to reach them," according to AP. I-10 was shut down in both directions while rescue efforts were underway.
Band members from Texas' Channelview High School were performing at a music festival in Orlando on Saturday, AP reports. They were returning to Texas when the bus wreck occurred.
The bus was operated by charter company First Class Tours of Houston.
"Our prayers are with the injured and their families at this time," the company wrote in a statement. "We pledge our assistance in cooperating with local authorities in the investigation."
