Prince Harry Reveals How He Asked His Father to Walk Meghan Markle Down the Aisle (Video)
There were too many feel-good moments to count during the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. But, perhaps the most heartfelt of them all was when Prince Charles, Harry’s father, stepped in to walk Meghan down the aisle himself.
Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, had been slated to walk his daughter down the aisle for her big day, but a series of health events and personal scandals forced him to bow out of the event. That left many wondering who would fill the role. Luckily for everyone, Charles was the perfect man for the job.
And now, thanks to a new documentary on Prince Charles, “Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70,” we’re all learning more about how that decision was made.
"I asked him to, and I think he knew it was coming, and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you,’" Prince Harry explained in the documentary. "For him, that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know he’s our father, so of course he’s gonna be there for us."
When Charles and Meghan made it to the altar, Harry famously looked at his father and whispered: "Thank you, pa." About the moment, Harry explained in the documentary, "You’ve gotta say thank you. Just because he’s my father that doesn’t mean I can just sort of go, ‘OK, that’s all, I’ll take it from here.’” Harry added, "I was very grateful for him to be able to do that.”
Harry wasn’t the only one to discuss the wedding in the documentary. According to Glamour, Charles' wife, Camilla also shared her memories, revealing the entire family also watched the television program like the rest of us, despite actually being there in person, just to catch all the adorable moments they missed.
“I think that was very touching, sitting where I was, you couldn’t hear what he said," she said. "But afterward watching it on the television, I…I think it was a very…it was a lovely gesture.”
