Meghan Markle Is Changing Yet Another Royal Wedding Tradition
Meghan Markle isn’t here for any of the royal’s “traditions.” The American actress, who is set to wed Prince Harry in May, appears to be bucking many customs the Windsor family throws her way.
For example, Meghan is reportedly planning to make a speech at her own wedding.
As Business Insider noted, like American weddings, British weddings typically invite the the groom, father of the bride, the best man, and perhaps the maid of honor to make a speech or raise a toast at the reception. But, according to The Times, Meghan plans to get up and raise a glass to both her new husband and make a direct salute to the Queen.
“She wants to have the chance to thank her husband and everyone who has supported them,” a source told The Times. “Harry thinks it's a great idea.”
Though it is rare indeed for a bride to say a few words, Meghan’s decision may be due to the fact that her father is reportedly extremely shy and does not plan to make a speech at the wedding. He will, however, be on hand to walk his daughter down the aisle.
And really, Meghan’s decision to make a speech shouldn’t surprise anyone. She is, after all, both a thoroughly modern future royal, and a very modern woman. Meghan is well-known for her work as a UN women’s advocate. In 2015, she even gave a speech in front of the UN where she stated, “I am proud to be a woman and a feminist ... A wife is equal to her husband.”
And that most certainly means she has every right to thank her own family, friends and future in-laws at her wedding.
This likely won’t be the only thing Prince Harry and Meghan do differently at their wedding. According to The Telegraph, the couple is keen to “reflect their characters and personalities” at their big day. That includes picking a wedding date that also goes against royal traditions, Meghan naming a Maid of Honor and even taking a few much more glamorous engagement photos than the royal family may be used to. But hey, she’s the bride, so what Meghan says certainly goes.
