Jaden Smith Is Teaming up With Airbnb to Share Tips on Having Healthy Political Debate This Holiday Season
The musician and a famed psychologist want to help people enjoy their family time during this complicated year.
As we slide into the final stretch of 2020, our collective minds are turning to the holidays. And whether you're staying put and celebrating Zoomgiving online or taking the necessary safety precautions to visit family IRL, it’s undeniable that this holiday season — smack in the middle of a global pandemic and an election year — will include some political chatter amongst loved ones.
But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as activist and musician Jaden Smith — celebrity son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith — will be joining Airbnb for a one-time Online Experience, Bringing Activism to the Dinner Table, to help people learn to facilitate healthy dialogue and debate.
Joined by psychologist Dr. Phillip Atiba Goff, co-founder and CEO of the Center for Policing Equity, Smith will host a group of up to 10 friends or family “to teach young people how to approach tough conversations with family members who hold differing points of view.
“I decided to partner with [Airbnb] and a good friend of mine, Dr. Goff, to talk about what's going on from a place of me being able to learn as well,” Smith told Travel + Leisure in a phone interview, adding, “every time [Goff] speaks, I’m learning, too.”
A group of 10 will be able to book the Online Experience starting Thursday, Oct. 29 at 9 a.m. PT for $10 per person with 100% of proceeds benefiting Vote.org. “Bringing Activism to the Dinner Table” will then be livestreamed for all on Youtube on Friday, Oct. 30 at 3:30 p.m. Pt.
Until then, Smith is encouraging young people to keep up their momentum and interest in the election and how they can get involved.
“I feel like the young generation is making a difference. We're speaking out and we're telling people to vote and to do so much — but we need to do more. We need to continue pushing," said Smith.
Airbnb recently launched their own voting resource center to help “inspire, educate, and equip hosts and guests to participate in the General Election this fall.”
For families looking for more activities to keep them entertained and relaxed during the holiday season, Airbnb has a range of Online Experiences that can be enjoyed together in person or online. Get out of your comfort zone with a living room scavenger hunt, learn a few magic tricks (and have some magic performed on you), or even take a virtual break in South Africa to dive under the sea with a shark expert.
